Director Kiran Rao expressed her desire for her film Laapataa Ladies to be considered as India’s entry for the 2025 Academy Awards. The film, which has received positive audience feedback, tells the story of two rural Indian brides who accidentally swap places during a train ride in 2001.

In a recent interview, Rao shared her aspirations, stating, “My dream would be fulfilled if it was [chosen for the Oscars]. But it’s a process, and I’m hoping it will be considered.” She acknowledged that the final decision rests with the Film Federation of India.

Laapataa Ladies, produced by Rao’s Kindling Productions and Aamir Khan Productions, promotes themes of gender equality and women’s empowerment in rural India. It features a cast including Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, and Ravi Kishan. The film premiered in March and has since received critical acclaim.

Last month, Rao and Aamir Khan attended a special screening of the film at the Supreme Court of India, which was aimed at fostering discussions on gender issues among judges and officials. Rao expressed gratitude for the opportunity to share her film in such an influential setting, noting it helped raise awareness about the film’s themes.
