Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is once again at the center of controversy ahead of his upcoming film Sitaare Zameen Par, following a delayed social media post by his production house, Aamir Khan Productions (AKP), which coincided with the trailer launch of the film.
The trailer for Sitaare Zameen Par, a sports comedy-drama marking Khan’s return to the big screen after three years, was released on May 13. However, AKP’s Instagram account shared a post on May 12, saluting the “heroes of Operation Sindoor,” India’s retaliatory military action against terror bases in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir. The timing of this post, coming a week after the operation, led many to question its sincerity, with some accusing the production house of using the national sentiment to promote the film.
The hashtag #BoycottAamirKhan trended on social media, with users criticizing the actor for his perceived silence during the initial stages of the conflict. One user commented, “This (snake emoji) broke his ‘maun vrat’ to promote his movie #SitareZameenPar,” while another shared a poster of the film with the message, #NeverForget Time has come to teach some a lesson! #BoycottTurkey #BoycottAamirKhan.”
In response to the backlash, Aamir Khan Productions issued a statement expressing heartfelt gratitude to the armed forces for their courage and unwavering commitment to the nation’s security. The statement also thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his leadership. The production house clarified that the intention was never to hurt or provoke anyone’s sentiments and acknowledged that the timing and sensitivity of the post may have caused discomfort or pain to some. The filmmakers expressed deep regret for any unintended offense caused.
Sitaare Zameen Par, directed by RS Prasanna, is a thematic sequel to the 2007 hit Taare Zameen Par. The film stars Aamir Khan as a disgraced basketball coach who is forced to mentor a team of individuals with intellectual disabilities. The film also features Genelia D’Souza and introduces 10 debut actors. It is slated for release on June 20.
The controversy highlights the delicate balance between national sentiments and entertainment promotions, with public figures facing increasing scrutiny over their actions and statements during politically sensitive times.
