Aditya Pancholi, known for his memorable role as Shripad Rao in Bajirao Mastani, recently turned down an offer to work in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s much-anticipated Netflix series Heeramandi. In an exclusive interview, his wife, Zarina Wahab, revealed the reasons behind the actor’s decision to reject the role.
A Vow to Avoid Character Roles
The actor’s decision stems from a personal vow he took to avoid character roles after a poignant experience with veteran actor Shammi Kapoor during the 80s. Wahab shared a story of how Aditya witnessed Kapoor, despite being a Bollywood icon, being treated unfairly while shooting for a film.
While the lead actors were pampered, Shammi Kapoor was made to sit under an umbrella for his makeup, while Pancholi enjoyed an AC room. Shocked by the sight of how even the most successful stars could be sidelined, Aditya Pancholi decided to avoid character roles in the future.
Wahab mentioned that her husband was disillusioned by the industry’s treatment of actors, particularly how the same people who once adored you could later overlook you in favor of others. Pancholi felt it was unfair, and this experience left a lasting impression on him.
A Respectful Decline
When Bhansali approached him for Heeramandi, which marked the renowned director’s debut on Netflix, Pancholi respectfully declined, explaining to Bhansali, “Sir, please don’t feel bad, but I don’t want to work anymore.” His decision was guided by a commitment to only take on roles that he felt aligned with his career path and values.
About Heeramandi and its Star Cast
Heeramandi was released on Netflix on May 1, 2024, and featured a stellar cast, including Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Richa Chadha, and others in pivotal roles. The show, set in pre-Independence India, follows the lives of courtesans and the intertwining of their personal and professional struggles, a departure from the director’s traditional grand, historical setups.
Aditya Pancholi’s decision to turn down the project, which would have been a major addition to his career, sheds light on the personal principles and experiences that drive the veteran actor’s choices in an ever-evolving industry.
