Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has issued a fresh and heartfelt apology to the Brahmin community, days after he stirred controversy over a remark that went viral and was perceived as offensive. In a long Instagram note shared on April 22, the Gangs of Wasseypur director expressed deep regret and acknowledged that his response, made in a moment of anger, ended up hurting not only the Brahmin community but also his own family and respected colleagues.
The director admitted that he had crossed a line while responding emotionally to a provocative comment. “Main gusse mein kisi ko ek jawab dene mein apni maryada bhul gaya… aur poore Brahmin samaj ko bura bol dala,” he wrote, acknowledging that his anger led him to generalize an entire community, which was never his intention. Kashyap also mentioned that many people close to him—friends, intellectuals, and family members—felt hurt and disappointed by his words.
Kashyap’s remarks come in the wake of his public defense of the upcoming film Phule, which has been under fire from certain groups demanding censorship. While engaging in debates around creative freedom, one of his comments about the Brahmin community was taken out of context, according to him, but he still took full responsibility for how it was perceived. He emphasized that his frustration should have been directed at an individual, not a community.
“Maine khud hi aisi baat karke, apni hi baat ko mudde se bhatka diya,” Kashyap wrote, admitting that his reaction derailed the larger discussion. He extended his apologies not only to the community but also to his collaborators and family, for using “abusive and inappropriate language.” The filmmaker, known for his candid and often unfiltered commentary, acknowledged the need for personal growth and restraint, saying, “Main apne gusse par kaam karunga. Aur mudde ki baat agar karni ho toh sahi shabdon ka istemaal karunga.”
This is not the first time Kashyap has found himself at the center of heated public discourse, but the tone of his apology indicates an intention to course-correct. Whether the controversy dies down or continues to affect his projects remains to be seen, but the director’s transparency has certainly struck a chord with many.
