Renowned filmmaker Deepa Mehta has partnered with director Onir on his new film, We Are Faheem & Karun, an intimate portrayal of a queer love story amidst the turbulent backdrop of Kashmir’s Gurez Valley. Set against the tense political landscape, the story follows Karun, a security guard from Kerala, and Faheem, a local Kashmiri student, as they navigate the impact of geopolitical unrest on love, friendship, and duty.
In a press release, Mehta highlighted the film’s universal themes of love, humanity, and the emotional weight of geopolitical conflicts. Known for her socially poignant films, Mehta praised We Are Faheem & Karun for shedding light on the heartbreaks and resilience found in turbulent zones.
Onir, whose work often portrays complex human emotions, shared that the story is about more than love—it’s a tribute to the nuances of human experiences in politically charged settings. Shot entirely in Kashmir, with dialogues in Kashmiri and Urdu, the film’s raw setting underscores the fragile yet profound connection between Karun and Faheem as they seek solace in each other against the odds.
