Renowned filmmaker Ektaa Kapoor is all set to release her latest project, The Sabarmati Report, a film that aims to explore the lesser-known aspects of the tragic 2002 Godhra train burning incident. Scheduled for a November 15 release, the movie delves into the origins and multiple perspectives surrounding the event, which sparked widespread communal violence in Gujarat.

During a recent press conference, Ektaa emphasized the importance of presenting a balanced narrative, acknowledging the complexity and sensitivity of the incident. “The movie tells the genesis of it,” she said, stressing that the aim is not to downplay any part of the incident but to give viewers a broader understanding of how it all began. Kapoor argued that while much has been documented about the aftermath, the origins have often been overlooked, which The Sabarmati Report seeks to address.

Kapoor also revealed personal challenges she faced, sharing how her appearance and cultural practices, like wearing a teeka (forehead mark) and bangles, have led to mockery in certain circles. Reflecting on societal pressures, she noted, “There was a time when even worship was done in silence.” Through the film, she aims to address such social stigmas and the struggles of staying true to one’s beliefs amidst external judgment.

The film’s trailer, launched on Wednesday, has already sparked significant interest. Lead actor Vikrant Massey, who plays a journalist investigating the incident, disclosed that he has received threats for being part of such a contentious project. Despite the controversy, the film’s creators are determined to bring this complex story to the public.

Directed by Dheeraj Sarna and produced by Shobha Kapoor, Ektaa R Kapoor, Amul V Mohan, and Anshul Mohan, The Sabarmati Report also stars Raashii Khanna and Riddhi Dogra in prominent roles. The film promises to be a compelling exploration of one of India’s most tragic incidents, with a focus on illuminating the often-underreported factors surrounding it.

The Sabarmati Report is expected to provide a thought-provoking perspective on the 2002 incident, making it one of the most anticipated releases of the year.
