Varun Dhawan’s much-anticipated action-thriller Baby John has turned out to be a massive box office disappointment, leaving fans and industry insiders questioning the aftermath of its failure. The film, which was directed by Kalees and made on a staggering budget of ₹180 crore, managed to rake in less than ₹50 crore, marking one of the biggest box office losses in recent times.
In a recent interview, actor Rajpal Yadav, who played Constable Ram Sevak alongside Varun Dhawan’s DCP Satya Verma, opened up about the film’s performance and the impact on its lead actor.
Rajpal Yadav: “Varun’s Attempts Must Be Appreciated”
Addressing rumors about Varun Dhawan’s alleged depression following the film’s failure, Rajpal Yadav praised the actor for his hard work and risk-taking attitude.
“Varun is such a sweet boy, very hardworking. He has always tried to do something different, and his attempts must be appreciated because it’s a big deal to take risks,” Rajpal Yadav said during an interaction with Bollywood Bubble.
He also highlighted that the film’s status as a remake of the Tamil movie Theri impacted its box office appeal. “If this wasn’t a remake, then this would have been the most well-made film of my 25-year career. But since Vijay had already done it, the audience had seen it, and it affected the box office of the film,” Yadav remarked.
Baby John: A Story of Struggles and Redemption
Released on December 25, 2024, Baby John features Varun Dhawan as Inspector Satya Verma, aka Baby John, a man whose peaceful life with his daughter is upended when past secrets surface. The film’s storyline includes an intense battle against Babar Sher, played by Jackie Shroff, and delves into themes of justice and vengeance.
The cast also includes Keerthy Suresh and Wamiqa Gabbi, but even their performances couldn’t salvage the film from negative reviews. Critics panned its writing and direction, with some comparing its sluggish first half to Akshay Kumar’s Rowdy Rathore.
Box Office Blues
Despite its star-studded cast and high production value, Baby John failed to resonate with audiences. Critics attributed its downfall to a predictable plot and lack of originality, compounded by its remake status.
While Varun Dhawan’s daring choice to helm such a project hasn’t paid off financially, industry insiders like Rajpal Yadav believe his effort to bring something new to the table deserves applause.
