Actress Kangana Ranaut has shared her candid opinion on why South Indian films are outperforming Bollywood movies at the box office. Speaking at the Agenda Aaj Tak session, Kangana emphasized the disconnect Bollywood has from reality, blaming it for the diminishing appeal of Hindi cinema among audiences.
‘Bollywood Lives in a Bubble’
Kangana Ranaut remarked that the Bollywood industry is preoccupied with superficial aspects like physical appearances, glamorous settings, and item numbers, rather than meaningful storytelling. She said, “Bollywood needs six-pack abs, hot babes, beaches, bikes, and item numbers—that’s enough for them. They live in a bubble and refuse to come out of it.”
Citing the Pushpa franchise as an example, she highlighted the relatability factor of South Indian films. She noted that Allu Arjun’s portrayal of a daily wage worker in Pushpa: The Rise resonated with audiences, something she believes Bollywood actors would shy away from.
Pushpa’s Phenomenal Success
Kangana also decoded the massive success of the Pushpa franchise, attributing it to its grounded characters and compelling storytelling. She contrasted this with Bollywood’s focus on glamour, which alienates it from the average moviegoer.
Released in 2021, Pushpa: The Rise became a pan-India blockbuster, grossing ₹136 crore in Telugu and ₹106 crore in its Hindi-dubbed version. Its sequel, Pushpa 2: The Rule, continues to explore the journey of Pushpa Raj, now a powerful figure in the red sanders smuggling syndicate. The film stars Allu Arjun, Rashmika Mandanna, and Fahadh Faasil and has left audiences eagerly anticipating the next chapter, Pushpa 3: The Rampage.
Kangana’s Upcoming Projects
On the work front, Kangana is gearing up for the release of her directorial venture Emergency, where she portrays former Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. She has consistently been vocal about her criticism of Bollywood and continues to advocate for more authentic cinema.
