The release of Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, which was slated for September 6, has been postponed indefinitely. The film, which Ranaut both directs and stars in, is facing a storm of controversy and threats that have derailed its release.

Taran Adarsh, a well-known trade analyst, broke the news on X (formerly Twitter), confirming that the film will not make its original release date. The hold-up is largely due to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) being targeted with threats, including death threats, which has stalled the film’s certification process.

Ranaut, who is also a Lok Sabha MP, is under intense pressure to alter or remove sensitive parts of the film, particularly scenes dealing with Indira Gandhi’s assassination and the Punjab riots. Critics, including the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), have issued legal notices to the CBFC, arguing that the film’s portrayal of the Sikh community is unfair and could stir communal tensions. In response, leaders from the Sikh community and various legal groups have called for the film to be banned in some states. Telangana’s Chief Minister, Revanth Reddy, has even suggested that the state might consider a ban after legal consultation.

Adding to the confusion, a Sikh organization has filed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) in the Madhya Pradesh High Court, seeking to halt the film’s release. This legal action underscores the growing opposition and concern surrounding the film. A source close to the production team revealed that the release has been delayed because the film is still waiting for the necessary certification. Although the producers hoped to receive clearance by the end of the week, ongoing disputes have forced them to postpone the release. This delay not only affects the film’s debut but also means that the significant investment in marketing and promotion may have been wasted.

The source also criticized the censor board’s demands, pointing out that the scenes in question are already widely known and accessible online. They questioned whether the board would prefer a completely different version of the events, suggesting a far-fetched scenario rather than historical accuracy. Ranaut, visibly upset by the situation, is hopeful that the film will be released within the next ten days, though no new release date has been set. The film’s path to release has turned into a dramatic saga marked by political and legal battles, leaving its future uncertain and eagerly awaited by both fans and critics.
