Uma Dasgupta, the beloved face of Satyajit Ray’s cinematic masterpiece Pather Panchali, breathed her last on November 18 at the age of 70. Known for her portrayal of the spirited young Durga in the internationally acclaimed film, Uma succumbed to a prolonged battle with cancer.

The Face of a Cinematic Legacy

Uma’s portrayal of Durga etched her name into the annals of Indian cinema. The iconic scene of Apu and Durga running through lush fields to catch their first glimpse of a train remains a timeless symbol of innocence and wonder.

Actor and politician Chiranjeet Chakraborty confirmed the tragic news, revealing that Uma passed away at a hospital in Kolkata. “Uma di’s daughter informed me that she is no more,” Chiranjeet shared.

Discovered by Satyajit Ray through a school connection, Uma Dasgupta’s debut in Pather Panchali became her most celebrated role. Her father initially opposed her acting but later supported her journey. Despite the global acclaim, Uma chose not to pursue a prolific film career, appearing in only a handful of films.
