Renowned music composer A.R. Rahman has finally addressed the swirling public speculation surrounding his separation from wife Saira Banu and his recent health concerns. In an emotional and clarifying interview with India Today, the Oscar-winning maestro opened up about both his personal challenges and the intense media attention that followed.
Health Scare Explained
Earlier this year, Rahman was hospitalized after reports of chest pain sparked concerns among fans. Dispelling rumors of a more serious condition, Rahman clarified that the incident was a result of a gastric attack, brought on after prolonged fasting and a switch to a vegetarian diet.
“I was fasting and had even turned vegetarian. I got a gastric attack and was in the hospital. The next thing I knew, it was all over the news. But it felt nice to receive so many beautiful messages—it showed me that people genuinely care,” he shared.
Speaking on Separation
Rahman also chose to speak for the first time about his separation from wife Saira Banu, ending their 29-year marriage. Despite a mutual decision and a request for privacy, the couple faced rampant gossip and speculative narratives online. Rahman acknowledged the scrutiny but chose to focus on the positive side of public interest.
“Each of us has a superpower in our own way. But I was made a superhero by my fans. That’s why I’ve named my upcoming tour ‘Wonderment’—because it’s a wonder I receive so much love and blessings,” he added.
Saira Banu’s Response
In a separate statement from Mumbai, Saira Banu, who is undergoing medical treatment, also urged the media to show restraint and avoid publishing defamatory content about Rahman. She described him as “the best man in the world” and emphasized that their decision to part ways was mutual and born out of emotional strain—not conflict.
“I trust A.R. Rahman with my life and will always love him,” she said.
