Actors Ali Fazal and Sonali Bendre are set to star in an intense crime drama inspired by one of India’s most shocking and disturbing real-life cases—the 1978 Ranga-Billa kidnapping and murder case. The web series, currently being filmed in New Delhi, will revisit the brutal double murder of siblings Geeta and Sanjay Chopra, a tragedy that shook the nation and left an indelible mark on India’s legal and criminal history.

The show is based on the real lives of Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) and Jasbir Singh (Billa), two criminals who were convicted of kidnapping, sexual assault, and murder of the two teenagers. The case not only gained nationwide media attention at the time but also sparked widespread outrage and demands for justice. The Delhi High Court eventually handed them the death penalty, calling the crime “cold-blooded, ruthless, and fiendish.” The execution was carried out in 1982, marking a grim closure to a case that had deeply impacted public consciousness.

Ranga and Billa, both with a criminal past, were escapees from Tihar Jail and had originally planned a robbery, but the situation escalated into a horrific double murder. Kuljeet Singh (Ranga) was reportedly the more violent and dominant of the two, while Jasbir Singh (Billa) was considered more manipulative. They killed the children to avoid being identified, a move that turned their petty criminal plans into a national tragedy. Their heinous act and subsequent arrest led to swift legal proceedings and one of the most high-profile capital punishments in Indian criminal justice history.

In the web series, Ali Fazal and Sonali Bendre will portray investigative officers assigned to the case. The project, currently under production, is expected to enter post-production by June or July and will likely be released by the end of 2025. With a gripping storyline rooted in real-life events, the series aims not just to revisit a dark chapter in Indian crime history but also to pay tribute to the victims by telling their story with sensitivity and truth.
