Renowned filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has been issued a notice by the Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC) court in Surat over a controversial remark he made about the Brahmin community. The court has summoned the filmmaker to appear on May 7, following a complaint filed by Surat-based lawyer Kamlesh Rawal. The matter has sparked significant debate and legal action on social media and beyond.

According to a report by IANS, Rawal submitted Kashyap’s social media posts, including his now-deleted controversial response and his subsequent apology, as evidence. The court found the documents substantial enough to issue a formal notice. Kashyap or his legal representative is now required to appear before the court on the mentioned date, or risk a unilateral decision in his absence.

The controversy began after a user posted a provocative comment on one of Kashyap’s social media posts, stating, “Brahmins tumhare baap hain…” In a heated response, Kashyap allegedly replied, “Brahmin pe main mootoonga… koi problem?” The comment quickly went viral and triggered widespread criticism, prompting Kashyap to issue a public apology. He admitted that his anger had clouded his judgment and expressed regret for hurting sentiments.

In his apology, Kashyap acknowledged the contributions of the Brahmin community to his personal and professional life and stated that he would work on expressing himself in a more respectful and thoughtful manner going forward. Despite his apology, the legal case continues to develop, with activist Atish Tiwari also filing a separate complaint in Mumbai related to the same issue.

The incident has reignited the conversation around responsible speech on public platforms and the legal consequences of inflammatory statements. All eyes are now on May 7, when the case will be heard in the Surat court.
