Actor and environmental activist Dia Mirza has opened up about the transformative experience of working on Kaafir, the critically acclaimed series directed by Sonam Nair. Six years after its initial digital release, Kaafir has made a powerful comeback on the big screen, reigniting conversations around its themes of humanity, justice, and personal freedom. In a recent interview, Dia shared how the role of Kainaaz not only challenged her as an artist but also deeply impacted her outlook on life.
Speaking to India Today, Dia revealed that the journey of filming Kaafir felt like working on “three full-length films,” especially given its emotional intensity and the rugged Himalayan terrain. But what stood out most was the spiritual high she experienced during the shoot. “Every day was like the biggest high,” she recalled, describing the beauty of the snow-covered landscapes, the warmth of the local children, and the serenity of nature that surrounded them.
More than just a performance, the role became a turning point in Dia’s life. She explained that Kaafir taught her the true meaning of autonomy—and that it begins with letting go of fear. “The only way to achieve autonomy is to become free of all fears,” she said. “That none of my choices need to be guided by fear. And that freedom, it changes everything—about how I want to live, how I want to bring up my child, and the voice that I want to have in this world.”
Dia also expressed her excitement about Kaafir reaching a new audience in theaters, especially those who may have missed it on OTT. She continues to receive heartfelt messages and reels from fans who are rediscovering the story and its relevance. “It’s heartwarming,” she said, “and I hope it inspires more people to watch the full series.”
With Kaafir back in the spotlight, Dia Mirza’s reflections serve as a powerful reminder of how storytelling can deeply influence not just audiences, but the lives of those who bring those stories to life.
